Rheology Research Symposium and Student Travel Grant
SOR RRS STG 2019: The 91st Annual Meeting of the Society of Rheology
October 19-24, 2019
Raleigh, North Carolina

Application Opens June 16, 2019

The Society of Rheology is offering student-member travel grants to help support the cost of attending its 91st Annual Meeting and the first annual Rheology Research Symposium (RRS) in Raleigh, North Carolina held October 19-24, 2019. It should be noted that this is the first year the Rheology Research Symposium is being run and attendance is required to receive the student-member travel grant. This symposium, held October 19-20, aims to provide mentoring and increase diversity and inclusion within the Society of Rheology. The RRS starts with lunch on Saturday, 10/19, prior to the Annual Meeting and includes assisting with the SoR K-12 Outreach program on Sunday and the Student-Industry lunch on Monday. Attendance for the entire SOR meeting is required.

Eligibility: These grants are available to any graduate student who is a member in good standing of the Society as of June 30, 2019. In addition, the student must present a paper or poster at the meeting, and stay in the official meeting hotel (rooms will be arranged by the organizers upon awarding the grant). Each grant will cover five nights (Check-in: Saturday October 19/ Check-out: Thursday October 24) lodging at the conference rate and all costs associated with the RRS on Saturday and Sunday, but meeting registration, travel to and from the conference and any costs incurred during the SoR meeting other than the hotel room are the responsibility of the applicant. Please note that based on the number of awards/rooms, each student will be housed in a double-occupancy room with another award recipient.

Application material needed from students: To apply, the student must write a letter requesting the grant, verify that they are a member as of June 30th, 2019 and discussing their commitment to membership in the Society. The student should verify that they have submitted an oral presentation abstract or poster abstract and that they will be presenting this work. The letter should be no longer than 1 page.

Application material needed from advisors: The student's advisor should add a letter of support, certifying that the student is a member of the Society, indicate the title and session of the submitted presentation abstract or poster and that the student will be the presenter. Discuss the benefits for the student of receiving mentoring within the Society and a statement of commitment to pay for the students travel to and from the conference and SOR meeting registration fee. Note that while we anticipate only one applicant per advisor will be accepted, additional students will be allowed if space permits. If more than one student is applying, each letter should indicate the advisor’s priority as we cannot guarantee there will be sufficient positions to have more than one student per group. The letter should be no longer than 1 page.

Letters from the student and advisor should be uploaded as ONE PDF file.

Submissions will be accepted starting June 16th, 2019 and closing on August 16th, 2019. Successful applications will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Notification will be made shortly thereafter.
